Tempered and laminated glass start out as float glass, both would be cut to the correct shape, slumped over a form to curve them, then two pieces would be laminated together with a sheet of clear vinyl between them or a single piece would be heat treated to temper it.

the tempered glass will look great forever the laminated will fog along the edges in time and could stress crack when insalling. Not a real big deal takes a long time for the edges to fog and much more brittle if you need to remove the quater glass. You can find the old ones in great shape I keep an exta used set just in case. And they almost look new paid 40.00 back in the day on ebay.
