Rickricca Posted December 27, 2017 Report Posted December 27, 2017 I need some transmission help for my 1940 c25 has an r7 overdrive and won’t hold second gear on decel anybody know how to find George asche? Thanks Quote
dpollo Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 jumping out of second is not an overdrive problem, the trouble will be found in the main box in the syncro unit or the bearing between the input shaft and the mainshaft or it could be the pilot bushing in the crankshaft. Also, a misalignment of the transmission and bell housing ( not likely, but possible) This can be an elusive problem to correct. Quote
Rickricca Posted December 28, 2017 Author Report Posted December 28, 2017 I knew it was in the main box, I should have been more clear. I identified it as an r7 to designate which trans I have. Apparently, many years are interchangeable. I may hav found an r10 for a reasonable price, but I might just bite the bullet and buy a recon from George asche. After all, this thing is 77 years old thanks for your expertise Quote
dpollo Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 The R 10 works well and will be easier to service. The ratios in the 40's main box with or without overdrive are more pleasing to some drivers as second is higher. The gear set will fit in the later box . Quote
Rickricca Posted December 28, 2017 Author Report Posted December 28, 2017 I thought about trying a small parts kit in mine but that seems a little intimidating. I would hate to have to pull it twice Quote
Ernie Baily Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 Hello, I've been working with George Asche on issues with my R10. He is a really a nice gentleman(86yrs young). His phone is 814-354-2621 Good Luck! Ernie Baily Quote
dpollo Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 just changing the pilot bushing in the crankshaft might help. Quote
Rickricca Posted December 29, 2017 Author Report Posted December 29, 2017 My experience has been that a worn pilot bushing typically causes problems with direct, and not reduction gears, but what do I know? Quote
Rickricca Posted December 30, 2017 Author Report Posted December 30, 2017 I bit the bullit and ordered a r10 with 40 gears from George. Great guy they don’t make them like that any more Quote
