Hi, I removed the starter, as part of removing the bell housing, clutch etc.I cleaned up the starter, painted it, it now looks purdy. I did udo the 2 long bolts and had a look at the brushes, I carefully put the case back together, today I id a bench test to try and see if the starter is okay. I used my 6 volt 6 amp charger,The stater only hummed a bit, but did not spin. Is the charger too low in power toturn over the starter or did I srew something up here.....................Fred

Fred,

Just put it on the floor and clamp the ground cable to a flange from a good hot battery. Then touch the hot jumper end to the starter terminal after you pin it down with your foot - they have quite a bit of torque and take more amperage than anything else on your vehicles. The charger doesn't carry nearly enough amps to spin it properly. If it's big enough, you might wish to clamp it in your bench vise instead. They really jump when energized with a healthy battery. LOL
