Frieda PJ Posted August 30, 2017 Report Posted August 30, 2017 Steering is a little sloppy. I pulled the steering column....cleaned the goop out of the box.....filled with 90 wt gear oil....everything seemed good...no serious looseness, pitting, or scoring..... I have her up on jackstands, the steering is very responsive. Putting weight on her, the steering. Is sloppy ...1" to 1 1/4" steering wheel play. Alignment helped...has new king pins, and tie rod ends. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Richard Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted August 30, 2017 Report Posted August 30, 2017 Richard , You have already done a lot but don't feel belittled with my suggestion . While the weight is on the tires , have someone turn the steering wheel where the play is while you look underneath to see where the slop is . You might find that the looseness is in the steering box or something else is loose . 1 Quote
Frieda PJ Posted August 30, 2017 Author Report Posted August 30, 2017 Ok thanks, Jerry. I'll try that next. Quote
Frieda PJ Posted September 6, 2017 Author Report Posted September 6, 2017 Hi Jerry, Finally got under there and checked. Everything looks tight upon movement. The steering wheel actually has about 3" of play. There is no play up and down in the column/worm.....just side to side. Perhaps needs new sector shims? If I decide to send it out, do you know of any reputable steering box rebuilders? Thanks, Richard Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 6, 2017 Report Posted September 6, 2017 I guess that you have already tried to adjust the play in the steering gear box . Here are a couple of places . I haven't done business with them myself but others have recommended them . Ace Steering ( Ace Automotive ) 801W. Forsyth St . Jacksonville , Fl . 32204 . 904-353-7111 . or Fleet Services 3250 Miraloma Ave . Anaheim , Ca . 714-630-2180 Quote
