Thanks, Ken Hart, for sending that sawed off chunk of steering column. I very carefully tapped the bearing out of it, and at the very last minute the bearing came apart and spilt all the balls. I was ready this time though! Captured all the balls and cleaned the bearing shell, put it back together with new grease, and ...voila!....I finally have smooth steering again! Much appreciated!
