I'm thinking of cutting a window in the top of my tank to thoroughly remove all of the rust and then put it back into service.  While I'm at it, I'm thinking of removing the Oillite filter, as it seems problematic from what I've read, plus it may be unnecessary since I'm going to have an in-line filter or two anyway.  Has anyone done this?

A "search" sometimes gets more results than just asking the question.  The question relies on someone seeing it to get a response.

I know they have been removed by some, as I have read it on this site.

Not saying that you have to search. Just a suggestion that will likely come up with some results:)

Thanks Shel, I did search it first, which actually lead me to the question as I read about everyone's Oillite getting clogged lol.  Maybe I just didn't read enough to find the one where someone removed it--I'm going to cut it out and see how it turns out.

Yeah, I did it. It was clogged beyond hope. A couple of years later I junked the tank anyway since it had lots of pinholes. I'd fix one and two more would pop up like mushrooms after a thunderstorm.

Thanks--I'll give it a shot.
