eric wissing Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 I got one spindle off. I had to go get a 3' peice of pipe for presuassion. One more to go. I hope I can leave the king pin in and send them off as they are!! At one point I tried to convince myself that a disc conversion set that required me to change rims and tires wouldn't be all bad I am hoping the other isn't worse than this. ERic Quote
Normspeed Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Hang in there Eric. Did some rubber seals drop out when you removed the knuckle? Hang onto those, you'll need them later. Quote
eric wissing Posted July 16, 2007 Author Report Posted July 16, 2007 Sure did Norm, I have a box marked "Rt" and one marked "Left". I even have a yellow crayon to mark drums etc. Pretty organized for me. I was thinking about getting new rubber bushings since I am already there. I could not have gotten this far without the forum. Then again without the Forum would I have gotten myself into this mess!! Eric Quote
PatS.... Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Glad you got it all aprt. I'm curious as to why you wouldn't replace the kingpins and bushings while it's all apart? Are they fairly new? Quote
eric wissing Posted July 16, 2007 Author Report Posted July 16, 2007 Pat, you are right, heck they seem fine, no wobble that I can tell. I wouldn't mess with them myself. I would find a machine shop? I just don't want to booger anything up at this point!! Eric Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Eric, I have the AAJ disc brake kit on my P12 both front and rear and I am using stock wheels. I think the same goes for Charlie Akers kit. If you were going to make the change, now would be a good time since the spindles are out and the required drilling and tapping can be done. Jim Yergin Quote
eric wissing Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 Jim, I will have the king pins done. I would guess they are pretty good. The car drove nice and straight and didn't wander even with the bias tires. Eric Quote
PatS.... Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 I am pretty sure my kingpins were OK as were the bushings, but I thought I would have more peace of mind if I KNEW they were NEW and not over 30 years old as I was hurtling down the highway at a blistering 60mph. Besides, it wasn't a fun job that I want to repeat anytime soon. Knowing my luck, something that I didn't replace would break in very short order and I would be doing it again. Now I know for sure the condition of everything up there. Quote
eric wissing Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 60? I am thinking of 65!! with the 100 lbs of lees dirt stuck to the suspension and the lighter disc brakes, who knows . . . 70?? Eric Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 When I pulled my king pins for the disc install they were not in bad shape. I discussed replacement with my machine shop anyway. I was told to leave well enough alone as the original bushings are made from better materials than what is available today. I put everything back together using the original bushings. Quote
