Okay, so I have searched the "resources" section about heat risers. We cannot get ours to work properly. We think the new spring I bought is defective. When cold it appears to be hooked up correctly but when hot it doesn't open and the spring seems to get tighter.

Any advice? I've read some other threads on the net and it seems there are some defective springs out there.

You probably got a spring that is wound backwards like I did at the above link. Mine did the same thing and turned out the spring was coiled backwards. Mine came in the rebuild kit from Andy Bernbaum's. I called them and they sent me another spring, which was correct.

Also, be sure the spring you get is actually a bimetal by using a hair dryer on it to see how it reacts. Mine was a plain spring and it did nothing with heat applied and it was from Bernbaum, I believe. So I reused the original one, which is still good after 66 years !
