52B3B108 Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 I had the feeling that I shouldn't but I did anyway to see what would happen. My horn wire was just about completely broken where it comes out of the steering tube, so I was looking for a way to find a couple of inches to splice into. I removed a small plate at the bottom hoping it would be dry (ha, ha, ha!!!) but no such luck. I lost about a tablespoon, or so, of gear lube when I pulled this stunt so where and how can a guy replace the gear lube that was lost? Also, is there a source that says how much the steering sector holds and how you check it? Thanks. Quote
Byronb3b Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 There is a fill plug on the top of the gear, take it out and fill it to the top, if your wire is solid and it's just the insulation falling apart, a piece of shrink tubing pushed up onto the wire and heated up is sometimes a good and easy fix. Reg Evans Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 In order to repair/splice the horn wire you'll probably need to remove the horn ring and button and pull the wire all the way out. To fill the steering box just remove the plug next to the adjusting nut and top it off. 90 weight should do it. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v154/olddodges1/Pilot%20House%20Trucks/?action=view¤t=MVC-005F-3.jpg Quote

That's what I'll do to give it some extra wear surface when I replace the whole wire because that is definitely the trouble spot. Unfortunately the wire broke in the process. In order to repair/splice the horn wire you'll probably need to remove the horn ring and button and pull the wire all the way out. I have the instructions and pictures of the puller that was made out of horseshoes for when the time came. Well, it's here. I'll go back out and look for the fill plug again. Thanks to both of you. Reg Evans Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 You don't need to pull the steering wheel to get the horn wire out. Just push in hard on the horn button and turn counterclockwise ( or is it clockwise?) and the ring and button will pop off enabling you to pull the wire. WAIT !!!!! Before you pull the wire up and out of the steering wheel tube tape a piece of strong string on the end of the wire. When the wire has been repaired you can tie this string to the new wire and pull it back down the tube. Quote
