Don Coatney Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 I drove my pilgrim over 550 miles today. She never missed a beat. I used my (Norm named) feed/water bag all day and found that it does drop the engine temperature around 10 degrees even in this horrendous humidity. My bag leaks a lot so I figure the leaking water finds its way to the radiator and evaporates cooling everything around it. The bag ran dry a couple of times and the engine temperature hovered around 190 but never went higher. As soon as I re-filled the bag the temperature stayed close to 180. I am camping out tonight in Sallisaw, Oklahoma in the cheap seats. Twenty-nine bucks for a room with free high speed Internet and a working air conditioner. I have been basking in the air conditioning for the past hour and it feels good. The trip was uneventful with no rain until I hit the OK State line. I have less than a hundred miles to go to see the drowned 57 Plymouth. I stopped in Wynne, Arkansas for a very enjoyable visit with forum member Clay Diggs. Clay and his wife treated me to lunch and we had a great time comparing notes. Clay’s car looks and runs terrific. I have pictures but I will not be able to post them until I get home, as this laptop does not have a floppy drive and all my pictures are on floppies. On to new business. I scanned the forum postings and saw the pictures already on the net of the very wet tomb. So it looks like the BIG RACE will move to the front page as far as news goes. I did not see a Pete update in my brief forum scan so I hope he is still safely en-route. When I arrive in Tulsa in the morning I will seek him out. Hopefully we will find a secluded road and give it our best. I almost (but not quite) feel guilty about the stompin I will give him. My car is RACE READY. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Don, Good to hear you are having a good trip. Feed bag and all. As for the BIG RACE, I finally figured out what Pete's secret winning strategy is, so I'll share it with you. It's his RACE partner. His son is much younger than both of you, so he can run faster than either of you to win the race to the lunch counter. Quote
eric wissing Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Feed Bag? I have seen pictures of them, anyone have a close up? I like the idea. Good Luck , Don. PS "It is the Sooner State because they like to cheat at races". Eric Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Here is my car with the feed bag that my kids gave me for christmas. They found it in the garage of their house. Dennis Quote

blueskies Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 ... I hope he is still safely en-route... Still en route, put up for the night in Santa Rosa, NM. We still have another 530 or so miles if we take a straight shot on the freeway. Damn, I had no idea how far 1500 miles was... I want to detour a bit here and there on old route 66, so we will probably take longer to get there than google maps indicates. We will not get to Tulsa until evening, I'll give you a call when we roll into town and find our room at the doubletree. Looking forward to seeing what's inside the plastic bag... At least it's still a forward look shape... Pete Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 So, Pete......how's your co-pilot, Joseph, doing???? He still having fun? Did you use the rubber strip on your door for wind noise, and did it help? We will get to the same Ramada as Mr Coatney......sometime around supper time. Quote

Joseph is doing good, but the days are a bit long without being able to burn off some steam sitting for long periods in the car... He's armed with gameboy, movies, six Hardy Boys audiobooks, and the laptop. He's working on a journal and a web page of the trip as the laptop battery allows. He brough his digital camera too, taking his own pictures for both the journal and webpage. We added some creative rubber positioning to the front doors, and it did help quite a bit. The door still have some wind noise though. I think the passenger side is coming in the wing window. All four wing windows still have their original rubber. Just about to head out for the final leg of the journey, see you in Tulsa! Pete Quote

Usually when schools open back up in the fall, the kids always ask, "What did you do this summer?" I think Joseph will have about the best of all stories. Most of them can all tell a story about going here or there. However, how many can say they took a 3,000 mile trip with their dad in an old 1950 Plymouth? It's a trip he'll never forget. Quote
