bach4660 Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 (edited) I went to a local annual charity show and shine for Parkinsons, this is the first year me and my son were able to attend, me with my unmolested and very aging B2D and him with his hot rod Fargo B2B We were trying for the Left Twix, Right Twix theme, to see what the crowd liked best, anyways, OLD Dodge won. But, what was interesting was some of the stories, I had one guy tell me that "back in Newfoundland" in the '50's they would dump all of the fish LOOSE into the back of the Dodge and he would haul the loose fish up and down hills, and he said " I learned to brake very gently" He said no boxes, not dividers, just popped the net into the one ton. Another guy was telling me out on the prairies they had a brand new Green PH and after hauling manure the paint was more yellow!! (I'm a city guy but that has got to be some pretty caustic manure) Last guy was telling me, his dad used to move truck and tractor into field by hanging a chain on the truck steering wheel, put it into first gear, pulled the throttle out a bit and aimed for the field, he would drive out on the tractor and walk back to meet the moving truck. ledfootslim Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Oh yeah, old trucks make the best farm trucks for sure! Our old ford is great- you can leave it in first and point it into a gateway, get out and open the gate, wait for it to rumble through, close the gate and hop back in! I'm reminded of a story my grandad tells of when he was a kid on the farm. He would fill the old International with loose hay, put it in granny and throw the hay out while it rolled across the field. His neighbor thought that looked like a great idea, and decided to try it in his new GM! After jumping into the back, the GM just kept rolling faster and faster......until it came to a rest on his Holstein bull! Quote

TrampSteer Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Yeah - granny gears and Farmers go together I think. My family did potatoes and later dairy. Throwing hay while the truck road itself just makes sense. 1 Quote
