Don Coatney Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Hooked up with Chet (and another co worker Sergio Tron from Chicago) this evening and went cruseing in Chets 1929 Plymouth. Car mostly ran great (Chet really needs to work on his gear shifting) on the first leg of the trip. We went to a local cruise in at a Chicafillngetlayed (or what the hell ever it is called) drive through joint. I rode this leg (shotgun) in the front seat and let me tell you Chet is a good guy but we were a bit too close for security purposes espically when Chet grabbed the emergency brake handle. We hung around at Chicafillngetlayed for a while and elected to check out the other action in town. Hit the highway running well. At the first stop light Chets son-in-law pulled up beside us and challanged us to a race. Chet goosed the engine a few times and when the light changed the race was on. I now know how blueskies will soon feel as this was not much of a race. Sorry to say Chet lost big time. Down the road a piece we encountered a bit of a hill. That is when the problems started. The engine was surging as if starving for gas. Chet skillfully drove to the nearest Sunoco and filled up with 260. We had about 3 miles to go to get home (with a stop at the 7-11 for breweskies). This part of the trip was done in short segments due to the car not running well at all. Had to pull over several times and give the car a rest. But the old Plymouth made it home under its own power. All in all a fun drive. Here are a few pictures. Quote
Normspeed Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Looks like great fun. I have to ask, was the cellphone attached to the windshield, or just bouncing up off the seat as the pic was taken? Seeing that 28 makes me wish I had been able to pick up that 30 Dodge straight 8 for $2650 buy it now a few weeks ago. Still crying over that deal getting past me. Very similar body and fenders, but with two fender mount spares. Quote

Chester Brzostowski Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Hay Don, Great pictures and recap of the night’s events. As far as the race goes.., I was certainly out classed by a hot Chevy Cheval but will that car be running 78 years from now.? The old Plymouth didn’t let us down and got us back home without turning a wrench. The last couple of miles were a struggle but the car definitely let us know what needs to be fixed. Thanks for the great pictures and company. As the weeks go on, the old Plymouth will just grow stronger as I attend to some minor details like getting gas to the carburetor when needed. The 29 has certainly distracted me from my restoration work on the 48. Just not enough hours in a weekend, but I haven’t forgotten about the P15 and should resume full speed in a couple of weeks. eric wissing Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Chet's car looks like a lot of fun. I really like the cars that are driven. Is that car orange or red? Eric Quote

The Other Norm, I saw that 30 Dodge straight 8 for $2650 on eBay and if I had a place to park it I would have scarfed it up also... A really nice car and I think a little rare. I hope it fell into the hands of someone who appreciates the vintage. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut feel. Chet... Quote
T.Tom Meshingear Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Chet, Looks like a fun drive. When I got out of the Army in 1971 I bought the pictured 1930 Dodge DD6 for $600 and it was my only car for a year and a half. I spent so much time behind the wheel (33,000 miles in that 18 months) that I could shift it without using the clutch. So the same rules for getting to Carnegie Hall apply to shifting with straight cut gears. Practice, practice, practice. From the pictures like my Dodge had the same fenders, the same Kelsey-Hayes wheels, and a bunch of other bits from the parts bin. It was a much nicer car than the Model A to drive on a daily basis. I know because my only car before I got drafted was a 1929 Model A. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for selling it. Tom Quote
Normspeed Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Chet, the only 2 things that stood between me and that Dodge were the distance from CA to West Virginia, and, oh yeah $2650.00:D Great looking car. Tom, what a beauty. Amazing what we part with due to circumstances. Dave, here an Essex, the book is from 1927 so the car must be thereabouts. [/img] Quote

Tom, what a beauty. Amazing what we part with due to circumstances. Norm, West Virginia is a hop, skip, and a jump from me.., I was really on the edge but my wife would have made life unbearable if another broken, rusty, car followed me home... 8 cylinders..., she would have been A-OK for highway speeds, that is if you installed good brakes. Tomorrow is another day. Too many broken cars and not enough weekends to fix them. Chet... Quote
