Hello, folks.

I was wondering if anyone here knows if the non overdrive components of a Borg Warner R7 overdrive are the same as a standard manual 3 speed normally found on a 1950 D34 (Meadowbrook).

Mine has a habit of popping off 2nd gear when coasting (never when accelerating) if the overdrive is off. My reading leads me to believe that the problem is in the bearings, so I wonder if the bearings are common to the standard 3 speed because the R7 does not seem to have parts availability any more.

The only other thing I could try is to replace the shift detent springs or shim them.

For R 7 OD parts, George Osche at 814-354-2621 should be able to get you what you need in addition fixing and or solving your problem. Another parts source is Studebaker International . For $4.00 they will send a catalog. If you take the transmission apart, you should check the spacers on the ends of the gear shafts. Have you checked the shift linkage to make sure the transmission is completly in 2nd gear? If the shift linkage is not correctly adjusted, this could cause the trans to jump out of gear.

Thanks for the responses.

I think I adjusted the linkage properly, the next steps will be to ensure the car is in second gear and disconnect the linkage from the trans to see if indeed the trans stays in 2nd to take the linkage out of the equation.

The trans is a George Asche trans with very low mileage so I think it should be ok, but the engine mounts are original so maybe the engine rocks enough to cause this?
