Guest Dodge Joe Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 I have a 4 speed in my dodge truck. It has the granny gear. Would I benefit by putting a 3 speed and would it bolt up to my flywheel? Joe Quote
Reg Evans Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Joe, I don't think there would be any benefit in installing a 3 speed in place of the 4 speed. The gear ratios in 2nd,3rd and 4th of the 4 speed are very similar to the ratios in a 3 speed. 3rd in a 3 speed and 4th in a 4 speed are both 1 to 1 ratios. 1st gear isn't really needed unless you are starting out on a steep grade with a heavy load or you have a stump to pull . Guest flathead6 Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Joe, If you change and I wouldn't since you won't gain anything but more work. The three speed takes a different bell housing than the four as it has been drilled for different bolt pattern to match. Also the cab floor pan fits around each tranny differently. The three speed being smaller you would have a larger hole in the floor. Hope this helps. Steve Quote
Guest Dodge Joe Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Thanks for all the help. Just a thought,I'm going to keep my 4 speed. Joe Quote
IanT_Qld Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 A Four speed will be an advantage if/when you put in a taller diff for highway driving. Quote
