Andydodge Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I have a mate here in oz who has a 1936 Dodge Sedan and is contemplating updating the front brakes. Does anyone know whether the 1936 Dodge stub axle is similar to or the same as the later stub axles, say 1940 or later?.........thanks, andyd Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Not sure what you are driving at. If you want to know which ones will bolt on I suggest you look up the king pin kits. I did this years ago for a Dodge pickup and found they used the same king pins from 1940 or 41 to 1970. Not sure if they are the same as car king pins. You might also look into the spindles or stub axles off a later independent suspension car. They used a king pin type suspension until 1956 in the US and I believe Australian built cars used the same suspension to 1962. Such an adaptation would likely require either reaming the axle oversize or sleeving it. It might also be necessary to bend the axle slightly if they do not share the same king pin inclination. Quote
Robert Horne Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 The 36 Dodge axle I have has a small diameter spindle than my 38 Plymouths. Quote
austinsailor Posted January 21, 2012 Report Posted January 21, 2012 Be careful - years ago I put spindles from a 54 dodge sedan on a 35 Plymouth coupe to gain the big brakes and ball bearings in the kingpin. they fit, but the angle was all wrong. Quote
Andydodge Posted January 21, 2012 Author Report Posted January 21, 2012 Rusty,Rob & Austin thanks for the replies, this mate has a 36 dodge that has an Oz 265 Hemi Six, auto & diff installed but still runs the original 1936 front drums........where he lives he doesn't have access to any other mopars or owners to compare notes with and I thought that maybe someone might have some specific info indicating whether the later stub axles maybe able to be installed on the 36 axle.............the info I have doesn't indicate that its possible and I don't have any 36 mopar parts to compare with my 1940 & 41 parts.......this guy is 1500kms away from me so its old car stuff by correspondence.........andyd... Rusty O'Toole Posted January 21, 2012 Report Posted January 21, 2012 Austinsailor seems to have the best answer. Later IFS spindles will fit but you will have to bend the axle to get the correct king pin inclination. This is possible on an I beam axle but not sure about the tubular axle. In the 30s Dodge used both but I think the 36 was I beam. Quote
Robert Horne Posted January 21, 2012 Report Posted January 21, 2012 My 36 Dodge axle is the tube type, same as my 37, and 38s. One could grind off the rivets of the brake drums, use the 36 hub on the 36 spindle, and use later model brake drums. Quote
