james49ply Posted December 27, 2011 Report Posted December 27, 2011 I will be rebuilding a 218 engine and was wondering if I could use late style pistons? They are lighterand could possably get a set of domed pistons to increase the compression ratio. Anyone tried this avenue? Quote
48mirage Posted December 27, 2011 Report Posted December 27, 2011 I don't think domes will do you any good in a flathead. Shaving your head to bump the compression is fairly easily done. Original pistons are still available but I do remember somewhere that custom pistons were also available. I'm not sure what would be gained. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted December 27, 2011 Report Posted December 27, 2011 (edited) For a regular rebuild used or NOS pistons should be fine, and not expensive. For a performance rebuild Ross or other hi perf pistons might be an advantage. In any case you should buy new rings even if your NOS pistons come with rings. There have been great advances in piston rings in the last 20 years such as low tension and low drag, which pay off in less friction and wear especially in a long stroke motor. Domed pistons will not do you any good. Ford flatheads use a domed piston but all Chrysler products use a flat top piston with a flat cylinder head. Highest compression stock head is found on 1958 and newer engines. Edited December 27, 2011 by Rusty O'Toole Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 Domed pistons will not work as the head is flat directly above the piston at TDC. Quote
james49ply Posted December 29, 2011 Author Report Posted December 29, 2011 dummy me, forgot that the cumbution chamber is over the valves, not the piston. but wonder if the newer style pistons being lighter would benefit performance? Quote
