Clock and Fuel guage

Ok, I have a question about the clock and fuel guage when changing to 12v. I have searched the archives and some say they don't know the difference. One person said it could damage the points in the winding mechanism if operated on 12v, others say they have had no problems. Car is a 49 Dodge Wayfarer. Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
