My goodness, This is so simple. The amp meter will work on 12 volts. All it does is register the current flow. Tell the guy to just wire in some additional wiring that will handle the load. Connect it to the meter and read the flow. You said this was at the wiring shop? Or was it just a mechanic that is wiring it for you? Any electrical tach should know how to handle this.

I believe that is what he did. Yes, this is a wiring shop and a pretty high end one at that. The thing is that they get a lot of hot rods in there that want to run all new guages, so maybe he never had to hook an old ammeter up to 12 volts...I don't know. But I think he may have learned something from what he read from the posts. He told me that the dash was back in and that he was going to start the car up to see how it comes out...the ammeter, I mean. So, I'll see tomorrow.
