On my 48 Dodge, the spare tire sits upright, so the fuel tank is shorter that the older Dodges. My 38 Plymouth had a narrow, long tank. I used a tank from a Datsun, and have a tank from a older Toyota that fits perfect also.

I'm debating to "reneu" my old tank, or replace it. There are tanks for 41-48 Dodges, tanks for 36-39 Dodges. Mine is 1940! Is it "special", or is it actually compatible with other years?

Up to 1939 there was the long/thin gas tank.

1940-1948 there was the short/taller gas tank (for the spare tire well). Owned a 1940 and numerous 41's and they were the same tank.

I noticed that there are at least two sizes for this era (1940-1948). The bigger Chrysler and Desotos had a larger tank and possibly the Dodge as well.

Here are the part numbers:

1940 Plymouth and Dodge - #1121520

1946-1948 Plymouth and Dodge - #1120875

My guess is that either tank will physically fit with minor alterations to the straps.

Try www.tanksinc.com I bought a tank for my 47 Chrysler, it isn't a dead ringer for the OEM tank, but fits pretty decent, they come in SS or Steel.

The only glitch is this, the sender unit goes into the tank with the float in the opposite direct of the OEM tank, again not a big deal.

I am happy i bought this tank, all nice and new, and very reasonably priced too........Fred

They have the tank for a few bucks less than Ebay, and there is a dealer not too far away. The Ebay guy says his won't fit a '40. I'm inclined to go with a new tank, the threads on the old one are pretty rusty. The pinholes on the top side can be sealed, but it's nice to have new. It's not like my car is a valuable survivor, I'd just like to be able to drive it worry free.

Which tank did you go with Fred? I'm going to need a new tank for the desoto and have been looking at a few possibilities. Originality is not that important...function over appearance, but close is good too. ;)

The 41-18 Mopar tank, in either SS or steel, I would go with SS.

Then mount into place, the gastank fitting does not require any ferrule like the OEM tank, will post some pics of it in a few minutes......Fred
