Jim Yergin Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 I know there have been a couple of threads recently with overdirve questions. Rather than horn in on those I thought I would post my own question. When I had my engine out to rebuild I also removed the R10 overdrive transmission and replaced the balk ring with an NOS replacement. Now that it is back in the car, the overdrive will not engage. I ran through the trouble shooting procedure in the Borg Warner manual. The controls all check out OK except the solenoid. With the solenoid removed, the plunger engages smartly when the solenoid is powered. However, when installed in the transmission, the plunger "bounces" in and out repeatedly. I am assuming that I re-assembled the parts incorrectly and that the pawl is not able to move into the blocker ring opening. I tried the procedure in the manual about pulling back the solenoid and turning the driveshaft to line up the blocker ring. No difference. I did read in the Chrylser overdrive pamphlet that the balk ring must be installed with the embossed side in a certain direction or else it will not work correctly. I do not remember how I installed it so I figure I will be removing the transmission this winter to fix it. Before I do, does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks. Jim Yergin Quote
suntennis Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Is it possible that the pawl was installed upside down? Quote
Jim Yergin Posted November 2, 2010 Author Report Posted November 2, 2010 Is it possible that the pawl was installed upside down? Since I am the one who installed it, it is not only possible but also probable. Jim Yergin Quote
