How to tell the engines apart?

I have a 53' B4C and I believe it originally had a 218 engine (if I'm wrong please tell me!) How do I tell the difference between a 208, 218, etc. when they're rusty, dusty, and sitting on a shop floor?

Look for the engine number on the drivers side of the block just above the front freeze plug and just below the head. Post that number here and we'll id it for you.
