p24-1953 Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 For the past year or so I have had problems getting the car straight in to reverse. If you shifted in to second first then reverse it worked fine no problems. Going straight to reverse caused the gears to grind 25% of the time or so. Nothing major. I checked the clutch throw and linkage, and everything looked good. So I just lived with the problem. Now it has decided that sometimes it likes to pop out of second. Not while driving, but just right after you put it into gear. I had found that if you keep your hand on the shifter until its fully engaged it would be okay. But today when I held the shifter in gear and released the clutch I noticed that the clutch pedal wouldn’t return. When you let the shifter return to natural the clutch would pop back out. So should I look at the clutch, linkage or transmission to start fixing this. Luckily I don’t need second to drive around with the hydrive. Quote
Tom Skinner Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 Dear p-24-1953, The trouble may be in the movement of the selector lever. The Transmission Fundamentals Service Reference Book Vol.2 No. 6 Copyright 1949 pages 20 and 21 tell how to check and adjust Linkage. "If the Nut on the Control Rod should loosen there may be to much travel in the Gearshift Lever" "When a Driver cannot get his transmisssion in gear, yet there is no gear clash indicating trouble inside the transmission the trouble may be in the selctor linkage"."Start the adjustment by putting the transmission in Nuetral". "Then check the adjusting nut on the front end of the selector rod". "If the Driver cannot get into reverse then the nut is to loose". "Tighten it until there is no play in the rod. Then back off a half of turn and tighten the lock nut". "Make sure you don't get the adjusting nut to tight, or you will make it impossible to get into second and high". Try the Imperial Web site under technical - look for pictures showing the procedure in the above mentioned Service Reference Book. I hope this fixes it. Tom Skinner Quote
