JJs 1948 Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Does anyone know what type of fluid was used in the old car compasses. I am fixing a Hull compass and found that mineral oil is too thick. Do I dilute the mineral oil with something else or what would be another fluid to use? I have searched the forum but didn't find where someone restored a compass. Thanks for any info. Jeff Quote
Jim Shepard Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 Don't have an answer for but I'm curious because I've got an old compass that leaks also. HOw did you disassemble yours? Quote
JJs 1948 Posted October 14, 2009 Author Report Posted October 14, 2009 I posted the same question on the car side today and the folks there replied with answers that will work very well to repair a Hull Compass and the types of fluid to use. Check it out. Good luck. Jeff Quote
fn11950fargo Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 I believe that compasses and gauges are glycerin filled. I think you can buy it at the drugstore. Jim Quote
JJs 1948 Posted October 15, 2009 Author Report Posted October 15, 2009 Thanks Jim. I'll give that a try too. Jeff Quote
