i got distracted and left my keys in the car with them in the on position for about 3-4 hours. the radio and lights were off, so there was no draw on the battery and the car started right up, but did i damage the coil? should i get another one just in case?

p24-1953,

Generally speaking, if you leave the ignition on the worst that happens is you could fry the condenser. For those of us who embrace the "every silver lining has a cloud" train of thought there are many things we could imagine going wrong, but since it started I doubt you have much to worry about.

It may be that you got lucky. When the engine stopped, the breaker arm landed on a high point of the cam and the points were open. That means there was no crurrent flowing. Its as if you had turned the key off. You should buy lottery tickets as it seems this is your lucky day.
