The box in my 49 1 ton is in need of a rebuild. I'm leary of sending it out because its the only one I've got. I have a tight one from a 52. I know that the steering shaft angles on these two different cabs are different-is it due to the ear placement on the steering box? Are the internals on these two boxes interchangable? I have a 49 parts manual-does anyone have one from the later PH's that would be willing to compare p/n's with me? Mike

Hi Mike,

My parts book says 48 - 53. Gear housing part numbers for the series 1 are different number than 2. Series 3 and 4 share the same number. Don't know exactly what the difference is, but can't be much.

Please know that these are very easy to rebuild. I have personally never seen a PH box that needed rebuilt. Have you dropped the lowe plate off and subtracted some shims? If you need the procedure for this, I'll be glad to help. Just let me know - contact me off-forum. They are very simple to adjust and rebuild. The sector shaft has two bushings that can wear. The worm gear - to which the steering wheel attaches - has a roller bearing at each end of the box. This is what you adjust with the shims on the bottom plate.

If you try this adjustment, make sure you first back off the mesh load screw on top of the box, and make sure your front wheels are straight ahead.

Good Luck
