Your transmission would have the solenoid and govenor sticking out the side like this. The solenoid is the black "can" looking thing on the far right side of the picture just to the right of the shift arms. The Govenor is on the other side of the tailshaft.

You would also have a control cable on your dash and wiring running to the solenoid and govenor.

If your transmission looks like the one I have pictured, it's a Tip-Toe Shift transmission and doesn't have an overdrive, unless you are referring to the top gear as an overdrive. The trannies actually had 4 forward gears in a high low range configuration. The Tip-Toe's had electrical connections consisting of an interupter switch, governor, and kick down solenoid. Those are the three black objects in the picture. The transmission I have pictured came on 46 to 49 1st series DeSoto Custom S-11's.
