Lou Earle Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 Was trying to get 6 v starter onto a 59 automatic to fast spin it-whole nother story- and discovered 6 v will not fit 12 plate. Close examination show the 6 v has a larger diameter shaft. The 12 v is much smaller so the 6 volt will not mesh properly. So it looks like a 12 volt will fit a 6 volt but not visa versa- tried 3 6 volt before I discovered the problem. So beware a 12 volt starter might work but it will be loose fitting and teeth might not mesh very well. Lou Quote
billwillard Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 Why do you want to spin it faster? Quote

Robert Horne Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 6volt starter will fit most 1956 and older Plymouth and Dodge engines. I have a 1956 12 volt in my 1936 engine. Quote
Paul Hoffmeyer Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 The flywheel ring gear was changed in '57 from the earlier 146 tooth to the 172 tooth gear that was used through '61. In '62 they went to the gear reduction starter and I believe that was different from the other two. Paul H Quote
