Joe Flanagan
Well, I shot epoxy primer today on the fenders, hood, and trunk lid. I hung the four fenders from the collar ties in my garage and set the hood and trunk lid on saw horses. It looks pretty good. First problem was that I couldn't get my gun tuned in. Pretty bad orange peel. I kept fiddling with it until it was better, but it's still not right. Couldn't manage to get it right. I figure that will be corrected with the high build primer, which I'm shooting on Friday. A few sags here and there. One dog hair. A couple mosquitos. Overall, it looks good. The time I took to get the metal and the filler as good as I possibly could paid off huge. Areas that were really bad look like new. On the other hand, there are a couple of things that got by me completely: a high spot or two, a few pits, some very very slight waves here and there. I'm happy with it. Cleaned my gun this afternoon and put everything away. What a job. I had never used an HVLP gun before, so there was some learning going on. Experimentation, too. I can't tell you how good it feels to have the bare metal covered up. Every time I turned around, I was having to remove flash rust. I did one final rust check before painting and found a good amount of the stuff, which came off with phosphoric acid. Took a long time to get it all, though. I was using a trouble light to check the surfaces. Then I applied grease and wax remover and wiped it off and waited for it to evaporate. Looks like my home made condenser/air cooler worked too.
