TieRod Dust Boots

I took off the tie rods on my 47 DeSoto, cleaned off most of the greasy semi-solids (akin to undercoatney), and checked the tie rod ends for looseness. All four ends were good.

However, the dust boots were toast. They were leather, with a big retainer thing pressed into the big end and a metal washer/gripper at the small end. At each tie rod end, I pried the washer/gripper off and cut off the leather. I kept the big retainer because it was low profile, and probably tough to get off.

I bought Dorman Products "HELP 13563" dust boots for $4.50 each at a local car parts place (D&D Auto Parts in Troy, MI) that was recommended by a hot rod business (Sweet Rod City in Royal Oak, MI). They only had two, so I will get two more on Monday. O'Reilly's listed some dust covers, but without much informaton, and at higher prices, affirmation for my decision to buy the remaining two at D&D. (It seems people need a lot of affirmation these days.)

I reassembled the outer ends, and the rubber dust seals squished into place nicely. I ran a screwdriver around to help the outer edge fit over the fat part of the tie rod end.

While the inner ends are apart, I'm going to fix the shaft oil seal on the steering gear.
