I'm looking to put in a 10" clutch for a quicker grab. Pros/Cons. Info? The clutch was worn down to the studs when pulled out. Flywheel looked good. My friend that is helping with the build and teaching me, mentioned about going with the 10". Thanks. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 Can you explain what a "quicker grab" is? Why would you want or need a quicker grab what ever it is? I dont know of anyone that makes a clutch "kit" for old Mopars. There are places that re-build pressure plates and clutch discs. Pilot bushings are available from lots of places and you can buy new throw out bearings. Use the search feature on this forum for more information. If your disc was down to the rivets it would be advisable to remove the flywheel and have it surface ground. Turning a flywheel on a lathe is not the best way to go as flywheels develop hard spots and the lathe tool will chatter as it attempts to cut the hard spot. A grinding wheel will not chatter. Find a good automotive machine shop that can grind your flywheel correctly. Quote
Normspeed Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 I run a 10" clutch from a small Dodge Hemi motor. It works great but not a tire smoker. Something you might look into is having your pressure plate rebuilt with stronger springs. You can get more grab than with the stock springs. The 46-54 Plymouth manual mentions springs in black, red, lavender, plain, green and purple. They are all different ratings. If you have that manual take a look at the table on page 59. A good clutch rebuilder (I think Don Coatney knows of one) can build your pressure plate to beefier specs. Quote
