I was messing with the car yesterday ('47 D-24)and dam I striped the carb bowl. Was putting on a fuel pump I found on the extra frame I have It is a 6v pump, but when I hook up a resistor to the 12v batt the pump does not work. I am getting 12v in and 6v out the other side but pump will not work. I hook the 12v to it and it pumps away? Not sure what happen I did hook straight 12 to see if it works at first then got the reducer because it does say 6v. Now only works on 12? As I unscrewed the nut that goes into the carb bowl (the one the fuel line screws into) Noticed it has a needle in it. I have another carb off the other flattie and it does not have one? does the carb need it? Anyway as I screw the nut back onto the carb bowl it strips out! Looked at the other carb and the threads are not messed up yet but look funky. Can I helicoil the bowl then screw everything back together and it not leak? Someone suggested putting JB weld on it and putting back together, but that would be last resort. So will the helicoil work, and do I need to put the needle into other bowl(where fuel line screws in) if I use that one? The other carb is different.

You do need the needle. That and the brass fitting are the needle and seat that keep your carb from flooding. I'm a shade tree boy and I would use JB Weld in a pinch but eventually you'll need to get another carb for a replacement fuel bowl. If you JB it, clean the fitting and threads real good with something like rubbing alcohol or acetone before you start. Put the JB Weld on both surfaces with a toothpick. Let the repair cure for at least 24 hours, and don't try to tighten or loosen the fitting...ever:D

There is/was a company called Thompson Products (Tomco) that made a whole line of replacement carb fuel-line fittings for just this purpose. Might be worth a Google search. Also, I've wrapped aluminum foil around spark plug threads to tighten up stripped heads.
