stevenelle Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Looking for some help regarding minor squeaking when applying brakes. Sounds like front. Took off both front drums and find adequate shoe thickness and nothing that looks abnormal. Lots of black dust, which I guess is normal wear. Still stops good, but I'm sure the squeak means that something needs attention. I do plan to do an adjustment this weekend. Quote
aero3113 Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 were the drums glazed over? Take some sand paper to them that should help Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 As mentioned, lightly sand the pads with fine sandpaper. Do the same with the drums and the noise will probably go away. Before I switched to disc brakes I had the same thing. The inside of the drum would get full of rust, then that got into the pads, making the brakes squeal when stopping. After removing the dust and rust about three times in one year, finally went with disc brakes. That way there is no drum for the dust and rust to accumulate. Quote
MBF Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Another problem common with non asbestos shoes/pads is squealing due to the hardness of the shoe material. If the shoes drums are glazed over this will increase the problem. The reason there are slots in disk pads is to control noise-kinda surprise they don't do that on the shoes too. Mike Quote
