230 progress

hello all and merry christmas. the 230 is running alot better now that i have replaced the points, condensor, dist. cap, and plug wires. it still backfires through the carb on acceleration. i will be getting a local mechanic to set the timing and valve tappet clearence. i will be replacing the muffler as well. my current air cleaner is one of the late fifties big bulky units with the paper filter. is there any smaller chrome air cleaner that will fit my carter B&B? i bought one of those small chrome ones today but it did not fit. and the others seem too big.

this site has been very helpful even though i own a car that is close to ten years younger than most of yours.

Be carefull with putting on a smaller air cleaner , sometimes they don't get enough air that way and run too rich . Some have stacked two of the small air filters , one on top of the other to get enough air through .

for the past few weeks the 230 has started up every time i hit the key. this morning it just turned over and over. it getting gas in the carb and getting spark to the coil what could have happened overnight to change this?
