Don Coatney Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Don, I notice that your steering arm has a bend in it. Did you have that done as part of the kit installation?I ask because mine is straight, no bend at all and Charlies instructions make no mention of that modification. Is that just part of the PlyDo kit? Thanks alot. Pat Pat; What bend??? I did not make a bend and it was not part of the PLYDO kit. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Hi Don,Tell me about your disc conversion. What hub did you use, same spindles etc... Thanks Jeff Jeff; Here is the PLYDO install sheet. Quote
Normspeed Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 You know, I was thinking the same thing. Also, when I assemble my shoes, I put a tiny bit of hi temp grease on the backing plate and spring clip shoe retainer where the shoe will make contact. That area might be corroded and putting up extra friction since Jeff's brakes had been redone quite a while ago. Had the same problem with my 53 dodge pickup. The return springs were weak and not pulling back the shoes. Quote
PatS.... Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Oh, OK. On my '49 the steering arms are straight on both sides (r & l). I guess I just assume that the front ends are the same but my steering set-up is quite different and I guess that includes the steering arms. Quote
De Soto Frank Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Pat, I discovered ( and am still discovering) the many differences between the '41-'48 cars and the '49-'54 cars when I was running my '48 Chrysler and trying to use my '50 Chrysler for parts... The '49 ("second series") were the first "all-new" MoPar since the '41 models, and aside from the engines, just about everything else was different from the '41-'48... Particularly the steering set-up, with that center-pivot on the front cross-member, drag-link, etc. Chryco also changed things like wheel-bearings, distributor cap & rotor, and lots of other little details... it all looks very similar to the '41-'48 stuff, until you try to swap something... How's the '49 coming ? Frank McMullen Quote
Jeff.P_46 Posted January 9, 2007 Author Report Posted January 9, 2007 Might have saved myself some time if I would have pulled back those shiny new rubber boots. Lesson learned....never assume, just because it was new/replaced it pays to check some things if a car has been sitting for some time. I will be getting in my new cylinders this week but I imagine my brake problem will go away. Jeff Quote
Normspeed Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Wow. Says a lot for these cars that the brakes were working at all. Quote
