had a guy come in the other morning looking for a condenser for his recent acquisition 48 DeSoto; talked with him a little about his car and he told me he'd just gotten it and his friends had already started telling him to jerk the flathead and V8 it. he was reluctant to change anything if it was still running (thank God) and i gave him prices on a whole tuneup for her. haven't seen him since the rain started getting awful so he must be staying inside. good to hear when another survivor pops up!

A couple of weeks ago, with my 47 Chrysler Coupe with flathead 6 underhood I pulled into a local country general store with gas pumps etc.

The owner and another local yoko, started jabbering, oh you should put a Hemi In the car. I said why a Hemi, how about a SBC, that way I can be like everyone else around here, I wasn't in the greatest mood at the time. I love flathead 6s, mine runs great, I also like SBC engines, but don't want one in this car, at least not at the present time, but everyone else knows what we should be doing with our cars, these 2 guys, are okay , but neither one has any of there old cars running and on the road.

Some guys have great ideas, are also fussy, have big plans how to do the body-off resto, but all too often never get a car finished and on the road.

I started with a real basket case, it isn't finished yet, I know the amount of time money and work that goes into fixing an old wreck can take.

Oh, just caught myself, not trying to hi-jack your thread, hope you can helpd this guy out with his Desoto, glad to hear of another old Mopar on the road..........Fred

hijack? conversation!

yeah, being too fussy about keeping stuff original slows down folks like me with shallow pockets. i'm glad the 52 is not my daily driver, i'd be forever pumping money into it keeping up with aging parts failing one at a time.

Politely suggest to your customer that he leave his De Soto stock.

Mine's still going at 67 years / 103,000 miles. UNRESTORED.

Flathead six, six-volts/positive ground, drum-brakes, bias-tires, etc.

I can't believe the sheer volume of guys out there who would go to the trouble, expense, and grief of a V-8 "upgrade", rather than just spend a little time making the stock stuff right.

( I'm not trying to convert those of you who want PS/PB, A/C etc...)

There is a sticker on my rear window it says : INLINE 6 or NIX

And yes I do have a hemi engine sitting in my garage doing nothing

I keep that one for a future project.

Funny thing is that on many shows and meetings people look at my

flathead six and wonder what kind of engine it is and who made it.

And the trophys I won with the car is because the flathead is still

in it !! And yes, when many people change the 6 for a 8

I tend to go the other way and keep the six.

When I went to the local Ma and Pa parts store for dist. cap and rotor for my Fargo truck 251, he asked for the number from the dist and from that he got me the cap and rotor the next day. He could also get points and condenser next day but mine are good.

No need to go hunting if you have access to a good partsman.

These engines are great and I just love the sound of them...cant beat it with a SBC

we'd be doing alright if the company purchasing agent would stick with one vendor instead of hopping in the cheapest bed every night. which is why i keep a copy of the OLD vendor's catalog close by....
