  2. I went ahead and replaced a blown head gasket in my 41 which happens to have a 1950 230 in it. Thing is I put a small amount of rtv on both sides of it (the gasket) and torqued it all down to spec. It then occured to me that i shouldnt have used anything on the gasket at all. It runs fine although I have not driven it or run the motor more than 10 minutes for other reasons which are being worked on as well. Any thoughts on this? I have no problem re-doing it as it takes very little time.
  3. ok, now were getting somewere. The voltage reducer would just run anywhere from between the coil and the trans. Got it thanks!
  4. setting aside the coil for a moment, wouldn't it be possible to use voltage reducers on those components of the m6? If so, which ones would they be?
  5. thanks for the replies. on yhe matter of running a resistor from a 12v coil, what if I used one that has an internal resistor. Would that serve the same purpose?
  6. I'm working on a 41 desoto into which someone put a later model Gyro-matic tranny. Now dont freak out on me, but I was considering a switch to 12 volts and was wondering if the electronic components on these (solenoids, governer etc.) will need or even accept those little reducers that are used on say, dash guages for the same thing. I'm not necessarily switching as I see nothing wrong with 6 volts, but if anyone has done this I'd like to know my options. Thanks.
  7. It being a 41, there is no post on the hey ign switch, but a steel wrapped integrated cable leading to the coil. I have changed to a new coil and spliced that line to the designated post on coil. As for running a wire from coil to battery, it got real hot and started some smoke in the dist cap. Remember, with the 6 volt alt now in, I have switched to - ground. What should I do with the coil? switch that polarity as well, right? And then which post would I run to the battery for that test? Thaks for the patient advice.

  9. well the timing is being set by ear for now as well as the choke which i am closing manually. I pulled the cap off and am getting what apeares to be a good spark- enough to see and FEEL at the #1 plug when I hold it to a head bolt.
  10. ok so I have a 41 desoto s10 coupe, and after installing a 6 volt alternator,reversing the polarity (incl. the posts on the ign coil), I can only get it to turn over, begin to fire but when I let of the starter button on the floor it wont catch. Long as my foot's on the botton it really wants to fire but just wont as I let off. could this have anything to do with the switch/button on the starter itself? Btw I have held onto this thing through a divorce at all costs!! Mopars RULE!!!
  11. And I thought it was just me! What I did was just put the parts back in the way they came out-and that means no rubber washer. Didn't know I had to actually bleed the master itself before any thing would pump out of it either. In the past I didn't need to do that (50 Dodge) but sure did this time (41 Desoto). Going to bleed the entire system soon as I get some more silicone fluid. Its getting hard to find. The local guy at Kragen ( I call him RAINMAN) keeps thinking I'm trying to ask for SYNTHETIC fluid. Dildo.
  12. OK, in my 41 desoto i dropped in a new 230 from a 50 dodge. The transmission in the 41 was replaced with an M6. The carb that goes with that m6 has a magnetic dashpot and a kickdown on it as well. I cleaned it up and replaced the pump shafts on it. I was wondering if I could at some point use the carb that came with the 230 (bvx-3 off the top of my head) as it too has a dash pot pump on it although it is not electrically activated. The issue of the kickdown switch could easily be moved to somwhere on the dash. Reason for this question is the newer carb is completely rebuilt and has been driven therefore 100% ready. The other I'm not as sure of. Thanks.
  13. Just drive it as you work on it. Every day you don't drive it is a day you won't get back. Seems to me when an old car is driven regularly (hardware store or a car show) your'e more in tune with how it runs and what problems may be developing. Most important thing is to enjoy your old ride while you can.
  14. It clearly states on my m-6 tranny to use 10 wt oil only but I'm having trouble finding straight 10. Any advice?

  18. ya, that was me. I dropped in a shorter block from a dodge into a desoto. I welded on an extention from the frame back towards the firewall of about 3-1/2 inches. Used 1/4 inch plate with gussets, etc. not the prettiest set-up but it'll hold. Looks like the fan will need spacing as well. No pics at the moment. One of these guys on here suggested I measure thickness of the rear flange on the crank to make sure they were the same ( I forget why but they were the same). Also make sure the bellhousing, shift linkage and transmission correspond to the engine you use as there are possibile differences. Throw nothing away.
  19. Swapped out the generator for a 6 volt + ground alternator (internally regulated) in my 41 desoto. Is it true that all I need to do is run the wire that formerly connected to the BAT terminal on the voltage regulator to the post marked BAT on this new alt? If so, what are the two prongs (one F and the other R) for? Thanks.

  22. yeah, I had to yank the original motor from the 41 and believe me, its longer than the 230 i dropped in. Welded up some new mounts. So the spit fire is the longer block then? Might look good on the wall though!
  23. Running a 230 in my 41 Desoto 3window and spotted an early 50's chrysler at the lcal yard with a nice looking spitfire (also a 6) in it. I was wondering if that head would bolt onto my block cause it would look good. Could obviosly just go and measure it up but I'm figuring on how to approach the owner as he is one of those guys you gotta catch on the right day in the right mood. So far we get along well enough but iv'e seen him be real cool to me and turn around in the same breath and throw someone out of the yard. There are dogs...
  24. Wondering if anyone has a shot of the terminal block usually located on the air cleaner strap with the circuit breaker and resistor on it. The wires run from the soleniod and governer (M-6 Tiptoe) to the kick down and magnetic dashpot on the carburator. I have the diagrams, but a clear photo would be cool. One witjh the wiring intact. BTW this site rules!
  25. Frank, this is the reason Iv'e joined up here! Your input is dead on. I have what I now believe to be the m-6 transmission in the desoto now. The 41 is a deluxe model and I have just dropped in a brand new 230 from a 50 wayfarer (front mounts extended). I plan on modifying the pcv set-up onto this and I have a split exhaust manifold we braized up. I will be posting picks at some point but to be honest, I can swap engines in a day, weld up floors and motor mounts, pull all brake cylinders and hone and rebuild them and all that good stuff, but getting a picture from my wife's digital camera onto the computer let alone posting it is almost beyond my ability! But I'll get there...
