  1. Also been looking into shipping...freight shipping has gone up like crazy. Im getting quotes from $800 and up to ship. The cheapest I found was $500 but the engine would have to be secured and on a pallet ...and dropped off at a terminal which one of the sellers told me he would not be able to do due to his age. I was originally thinking of engine located in Alabama ...I was thinking of renting a UHaul. The only issue was seller said he did not guarantee it to run and its been sitting since his father passed away. He was asking $400 for it. But after talking to my dad he said the military engine might be a better choice since seller says it has only 38k on it and was rebuilt previously. Seller wants $800 for it. Shipping would be about $900 with it being in Minnesota. Im beginning to lean towards my dads advice on the military engine. Decisions.
  2. Been doing some research on this Dodge m37 military 230 engine. The horsepower and rpm for the military engine is lower then engine that was originally intended for the car. If I wanted to put the military engine into the car, the lesser weight of the car would offset the horsepower and rpm of the military engine? Am I correct in that theory? Dodge 1950 - 1953 with 1 Barrel Carb (for passenger cars) Max Brake Horsepower: 103 @ 3600 rpm Max Torque: 190 @ 1200 rpm Stroke: 4.625 Bore: 3.25 Compression: 7.0 vs Dodge M37 Specifications Model: T245 Dodge. Type: "L" Head, 6 cylinder. Power: 78 bhp (58.2 kW) at 3200 rpm. Displacement: 230 cu in (3.8 L) Bore: 3+1⁄4 in (82.6 mm), Stroke: 4+5⁄8 in (117 mm) Oil capacity: 6 US qt (5.7 L) Radiator capacity: 25 US qt (24 L)
  3. Does anybody know anything about shipping engines? I'm interested in buying this engine in Alabama but have never shipped something as big as an engine. I am also not familiar with what prices I should be paying to ship. Engine pickup would be Trinity, Alabama 35673 to delivery Sebring Fl 33875 I spoke to guy over the phone. He's an older guy who said his deceased father had a shop. He even invited me out to Alabama to go over to search through all the parts such as generators, starts, carburetors his father still has laying around the shop. But he told me the engine has been kept in shop since his father took it out a vehicle and it turns over. Feeling kind of excited now.
  4. Oh man Ive had a stressful week at work...and now Im stressed out even more because I havent been able to find any engine locally. Ive been asking around with friends and their friends. ? Just my luck smh
  5. Very good and solid looking project. I remember my days out of high school like they were yesterday. I also think those fastback wayfarer's were some sleek looking cars. Im also a fan of the patina look. Much props to you man for going for the engine swap. What happened to your stock engine, if I may ask?
  6. Today was Sunday and I spent the evening draining the fluids out of the cracked and old engine. When I unplugged the oil drain...what looked to be radiator coolant came gushing out first before the oil. I also drained the coolant from the radiator as well too and noticed rust sediments from the radiator hose that connects to thermostat. I had watched a video posted by @keithb7 awhile ago on his YouTube channel where he talked about draining the block. Now Im starting to realize why my engine cracked and exploded on me in the middle of the highway. I would change fluids but never drain the actual block. Here's the video link in case anyone wants to know what Im talking about.
  7. Yeah one of the guys from the FB group clarified that...studebaker block does not interchange with mopar block. Thanks for also confirming
  8. Found another potential engine...its in Minnesota. Guy says it has 38k on it and off a military fire truck. He's asking $800 for it plus shipping. Is that a good price?
  9. Thanks this info made me feel alot more educated now knowing whats important when considering a replacement
  10. Do you know if it'll bolt up to my gyromatic transmission? Another interesting thing that's come to my attention as I'm on the search for a replacement engine. On the "flathead 6" facebook group that Ive posted up...One guy stated that Studebaker shared the same block from 1939-1954. Can anybody confirm that? Its just interesting to me
  11. So theres a guy out in Alabama who says he has 1959 230 engine that turns over and "feels good" from his deceased fathers shop. He provided these pictures of the numbers on the engine. Can anybody confirm its a 230 with these pictures?
  12. I really like your idea...I just got to be patient and wait for the right one to pop up. One of my older friends keeps trying to peer pressure me to throw a small block in it and call it a day...but I cant justify all the work since I like my cars low and slow ?? Ive always wanted to run a dual carb on these flatheads too so maybe in the future when I do a complete rebuild
  13. I planned on rebullding the original engine before it cracked...couldve shouldve wouldve...oh wells you live you learn ... luckily Im single with no wife and no kids so this is where I spend my pennies and quarters ??
  14. Bummer... I thought this was going to be in the $1500 usd range. I'm still trying to find a decent engine within drivable distance to atleast see if engine runs and save on shipping costs. Would it be wise to find a used and running 230 instead of rebuilding? Yes it's a gamble but if I went that route what would I need to look out for? @keithb7 the part of "it adds up fast" is the part that I forget when watching your videos ?
  15. At 31 Ive finally learned the truth in that saying that goes "sometimes less is more"...well at least in my case. Btw Ive never rebuilt a engine before. How do I go about it once I get the engine? Do I just find a machine shop, tell them Im trying to do with the engine, and they handle everything from there on such as parts? What is a reasonable price I should pay to get the engine rebuilt?
  16. Yeah so no go with the that 251 engine...I was trying to find something within drivable distance to avoid shipping costs but so far that's been a negative. I'm not a welder nor do I have any fabrication skills so if it doesn't bolt in then I'm not trying to deal with it. I learned that lesson my years ago. I want the '50 Coronet up and driving not parked and sitting there. Might just have to ship that one from the rock auto website and have it rebuilt here locally.
  17. So no go with the 25" engine....thanks for answer
  18. My favorite Mopar Youtube Celebrity just replied back to my post ??
  19. Do you know if it'll be interchangeable with my stock gryomatic transmission and rear axle?
  20. There's a guy about 3hrs away from me here in Florida who messaged me some pictures of an engine he has laying around in his shop. He doesn't know much about it other than its the 25" style flathead he says...I asked him to get the engine number so I'll wait and see. Anybody have any clue or some sort of an idea on his engine and if it will work in my setup?
  21. Does anybody know if the 230 engine of all years would be interchangable with my gyromatic tranmission? Sorry for novice question, Im just trying to figure out how to keep car as stock as possible. A friend is saying to throw a small block mopar but I dont want to go opening a whole new can of worms that I dont have the experience for and I just want to drive this back up again before the end of the year. Ive learned my lesson with project cars in the past...you start changing things and it becomes a never ending process.
  22. this is what an old friend was telling me this evening...buying a motor as a novice especially one that is not currently running and not having a clue what youre doing (myself). yikes
  23. I clicked on the website and searched and it they don't appear in results.
  24. I recently had my carburetor rebuilt and I installed it back on this weekend. Well last night as I driving my '50 Coronet home...I heard a loud screech and then a loud boom as smoke started fuming from under the hood. I quickly pulled over as the car was loosing engine power. I got out checked what happened. It was really dark but saw my oil filler tube had exploded off the engine block. The oil filler tube was tangling at the bottom of the engine and the side of my engine was cracked or busted open. Obviously the 230 engine is not rebuildable. I want to keep the car still original as is. Still 6 volt. Which other engines would be my other options without having to change gyromatic transmission and without having to change rear axle? Sorry this is my first time blowing up an engine.
  25. interesting topic. I burned out my parking braking on my 1950 Dodge Coronet. Could I replace it easily? My first time.
