58prostreet Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 I have a '52 Dodge with fluid drive and want to install the t-5 using a trans. adapter. Am I correct in thinking I need a standard 3 speed bell housing, flywheel and pressure plate? If so, do I need to move or modify the rear cross member to work with the shallower bell housing? Will the fluid drive clutch linkage work with the standard 3 speed bell housing? I've looked at all the posts concerning this conversion and am still confused. Thanks for tolerating another t-5 question. Bob Quote
PatS.... Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 The only difference in "fluid drive" and "normal" is the fluid coupling where the "normal" car would have a flywheel. Otherwise everything is the same. You COULD leave the "fluid coupling" where it is and install your T-5. It would sure be a conversation peice...letting the clutch out without it stalling, starting out in 3rd without a chatter or stall. Great for teaching someone to drive a standard, too This is from my Chrysler Royal. It is a regular 3 speed standard transmission attached to a bellhousing containing the "fluid coupling" and a regular type clutch. The fluid drive bellhousing is 12 3/4 inches from front to back. 58prostreet Posted January 17, 2008 Author Report Posted January 17, 2008 Pat I thought the input shaft on the t-5 was too short to use the fluid drive bellhousing. Do u have to get a longer input shaft made? Like I said, I am confused. I know this topic has been discussed many times before, but I am still confused. Thanks Bob Quote
james curl Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 The fluid drive unit uses a heavy steel bolt on surface to mount the pressure plate and the clutch disc on the back side of the fluid drive unit. But the transmission for a fluid drive still uses a longer input shaft than the standard drive transmission. Quote
PatS.... Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 I'll have to measure the shaft today. I was planning on swapping an M6 in where the 3 speed once lived. There may be a problem I didn't measure the shaft of the standard 3 speed and I gave it away last year. Quote
splitz1983 Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 if you run into a clutch linkage problem,i solved mine by using a howe hydraulic release bearing and a wildwood clutch 1 inch master cylinder...howe racing products. Quote
