dgrinnan Posted February 27 Report Posted February 27 I just installed one of the 6v replacement electric wiper motors from DCM Classic. When you order, they tell you that you need to buy a different wiper arm to fit the new motor, which I did. It works, but I am not happy with it. DCM is my go-to for most of my parts, but I am not happy with the electric motor/wiper set up. Hard to tell until I use it for a while, but the motor was wired with a 16 ga. leads. This is very light duty for a 6v wiper motor. The wiper arm, on the other hand, could not be made any cheaper I seriously doubt it will last through 2 rains. Not so much the arm itself but the blade. It is terrible. Has anyone found a replacement 6v electric wiper motor and wiper they are happy with? I have not even used it yet, but I am already looking for options to so how put a different wiper blade on the new arm I just bought. Quote
MBSoPaB Posted February 29 Report Posted February 29 Dgrinnan, most of the Job Rated era Dodges that I've come across with sporting wiper motors other than the Trico vacuum units were vintage American Bosch units. They're a pretty substantial unit in situ, but compact enough to hide behind that wiper motor cover overhead. Some pics attached of a 12v unit (looks just like their 6v units; difference is in the part number, which also alludes to the degrees of swing) that was in my '48 FWD with a long shaft, you can see how they utilized a rheostat switch to change the speed to their liking. Also note how they used a switched unit on the passenger side, to halt that wiper, if it wasn't needed. My buddy installed one of those little modern units and had poor results, like you have experienced, I believe his was from VPW or Roberts, new arm, etc; very underwhelming. My personal solution was a cowl unit from a marine supplier; just be cautious about the body size relative to fitting it in the Dodge wiper actuator location. Hope your project ends with a simple solution! Brian A. (MBSoPaB) Quote
dgrinnan Posted February 29 Author Report Posted February 29 (edited) That is the current unit I have but it is not working. Either one. I only bought one new replacement. I plan on pulling one of the originals apart and seeing if I can bring it back to life. If so, I might try the other one also. I have ordered a different blade I think I can retro fit on the new replacement wiper are that I hope will be more substantial. The bottom pic is the blade that came with the new wiper arm. The top pic is the replacement I hope to attach. Edited February 29 by dgrinnan Quote
