BobT-47P15 Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 Back in 1960, I totalled the parents nice gold and cream 57 Plym wagon with V8 engine and pushbutton transmission. So with the insurance money in hand, Dad went to the Chevy dealer and purchased this wagon new. 6 cyl with stick shift, turquoise and white. Not the deluxe model. Lovely blackwall tires and small hubcaps. The "before" picture here. I don't know where my "after" picture is just now, but that wagon got spruced up by me. (Dad was somewhat generous with letting me do it.) It had whitewall rings and flipper hubcaps, 59 Caddy tail light lenses, and a fake two pipe exhaust coming out. Looked better to me anyway. Quote
Olddaddy Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 When I was 16 I had to borrow a car from a buddy just to take my drivers test. I never drove my parents car, ever. I scraped together $100 and bought a 1960 VW Transporter, the van type with no windows. It ran on 3 cylinders, the 4th one having a stripped out plug hole. It sounded like a machine gun going down the road. I rebuilt the engine on the floor in the utility room by the washing machine. The bearings were the wrong size for the crank so I filed them by hand till the crank would turn. It ran for awhile but eventually caught fire and burned........I traded it for an Austin Healey 100/6 and was never the same again. And my parents never ever let me drive their car........never! PatS.... Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 I took my drivers test on my dads 58 Rambler Super. He still had the 49 Chrysler parked in the garage and I was allowed to drive it as long as it never cost him any money...not a dime. He sold the Rambler and bought a 64 Mercury Marauder 2 door with the 390, and I got to drive it a few times, a couple on the highway...that was a great highway car. I never wrecked one of his cars, actually never wrecked a car at all, so he was OK. I think that would have changed had I wrapped the Merc around a tree Quote
Guest youngnovice Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 When I got my license my dad let me use his 73 GMC (gas hog) pickup to get to and from work and school. He always got mad if I used it for anything else. He made me put the truck in my name and insure it. I had my 46 at the time but it wasent ready to be drivin yet. Quote
