kristoforscott Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) I recently had my 48 frame sandblasted and it uncovered pin hole rust in rear arched cross member. Has anyone ever rebuilt this or does anyone have one to sale me? All help is greatly appreciated. Edited March 19, 2014 by kristoforscott Quote
MBF Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Is the rust hole on the cross member itself, or the riveted on bottom cover that encloses the actual cross member? Seems like these were excellent at becoming homes for rodents who then left their building materials behind to collect and hold moisture. I have one that has a hole in it that I'm going to cut out and weld in a patch. If the cross member itself is perforated, that may require more substantial repairs as the bottom cover would have to be removed near the damaged section in order to see what type of reinforcement is needed. kristoforscott Posted March 19, 2014 Author Report Posted March 19, 2014 It's on the cab side passenger side. I was able to poke holes through one side. It appears to be rat nested as you said. Quote
rustrunner Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 Had a cross member on my KA that was rusted, and they are not that hard to rebuild. Either take some good measurements, or do as we did and weld a support across the top and bottom of the frame, cut out the bad, and weld in new. Lot of grinding but not all that bad. We made a complete new (side to side) bottom plate to weld in. That mouse pee does a lot of damage. Dan Quote
