wreckermk36 Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 i just got a new battery today cause the other one had couldnt hold a load. i test my alternator set by starting the truck and disconnecting the main neg. so that why the alternator was running the truck by it die right away. i has a delco si 10 63 amp alt. it is set up the way it is suppose to. terminal 2 is jumped to the battery term. and terminal 1 goes to a dummy light/ fuse and then to the ignition switch, out of the switch and to the battery. so if this is right? how do i tell if the alt. is bad? 48mirage Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 Take a voltage reading at the battery when it is running. It should be close to 14 volts if the alternator is running. You can turn on all of your accessories and check again to see if the alternator is keeping up. Quote
wreckermk36 Posted June 21, 2011 Author Report Posted June 21, 2011 now it does even start. new battery, only started 3 times and its trying but just wont:confused Quote

Looking at the 4th photo, it looks as if you have 1 wire coming from the alt. I believe there should be 3 wires. A heavy gauge to the battery, another medium gauge wire for "R", and another for for "F". Has been some time since I worked on a GM. Quote
48mirage Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 The 10 SI is an internally regulated alternator. A lot of them are 1 wire alternators setup to self excite at a certain rpm. Here is a link to some info that may help you. http://www.madelectrical.com/electrical-tech.shtml Quote
wreckermk36 Posted June 24, 2011 Author Report Posted June 24, 2011 well i got the truck started and with the altenator run the battery is reading 14v so i guess im good thanks for the help Quote
40deluxe Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 Photo #4: Terminal 1 & Terminal 2 wires should be reversed. Quote
james49ply Posted June 27, 2011 Report Posted June 27, 2011 the two small wires, 'f' and 'r' can be tied together as they are in modern cars to the ignition switch. I wired mine the same way your is and the small wire to the battery kept the alternator active when engine not running, thusly draining the battey. tied them together to the ignition switch and all is well.
