Bill, That is one of the problems with buying a street rod already built. The nly way to find out what the PO did is to take it apart. I did the same thing. I was lucky because it was running rich in two cly and would have hurt the motor. The carb was not adjustable on one side. Gas was being dumped. I could smell unburned gas at start up however after it warmed up you could not smell it but it was still there.Changing the top of the motor cured that.

If you have a 271 gear and it burns rubber on take off and curps second gear it must have a stall converter. If you did not have one it would be very lazy off the line. The way you can tell is when you are sitting in drive looking at the tach as you press on the gas, when does the car start to move. My Charger will not move until the motor is turning about 2,300 rpm. it has a 2,500 stall converter. I can tell you from experience that if you went to a 371 gear you would not like the car. on the highway you could not run in the left lane without hurting the motor or something else. The person that built the car knew what they were doing as most street rods are built for the highway and street. You could come up to 308 without hurting anything.

The low vacume at idle is typical of street rods. where you able to listen to my car from the YOUTUBE feature I left on the post. The idle is very strong and that is at 1,300 rpms

Bill I was looking at your car and it looks so good. I think 1940-41 street rods are underated. The guy's around here where I live all love 38, 37 36 chevys, there are alot of guy's with 46,47 fords some 34 35 fords and the rods look good. When I pulled up with the 40 they lost their minds. It has alot of roomand it's a two seater. It has a nice stance. Your car has a nice round look about it. All 1940-41 year model cars have it. Those little things will work themselves out as you drive the car Bill I would not worry about it. My car is worked on by some f the best drag race guy's around here, They can make anything go. My mechanic is Malcolm Durham's brother. In the early years Mr. Malcolm use to work on my motors personally. The 55 Chevy that I have was done by him. The Charger was also however I went to far there, the car is a little to fast....scary:)

hey RODNEY...thanks for your info and assuredness!!!

my mechanic totally did the carb from top to bottom and adjusted everything and replaced and recorded all jets and setings. he tries to 'marry' all components and settings so they work together..no weak link. although i have a few inherent ones.

yes it has a stall conv.....maybe 25-28oo

it also has a floor shifter that you can pull it way back then 'tap' it through 1st-2nd-3rd gear like a stick.! haven't had time to try it yet..too new..too cold out.

we put new lug bolts on rear for good tire/frame clearance..

i am wondering about rear tire size...fr.225 60x15....r.255/70x15 the front has a bigger dia. than the rear.(maybe i have the 60/70 backwards)

sound and YOUTUBE...NO i cannot access that stuff. i just dont know how.

i am sure my mac has it but i dont know what button to push to get it!

hey..I am off to IRELAND for a week.....hope i make it !
