Levand16 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 When I brought this car I got a title that had been signed over to a car dealership that is no longer in business. I also got a bill of sale from when the car was sold in Nov 2004. My problem is that the bill of sale and title both have different VINs but the same license number year and model. The titles VIN starts with a D then has 8 numbers behind it (can't find this number on the car), the bill of sale has a 8 digit VIN all numbers and this matchs the serial plate on the door jamb. There are some plates on the front of the firewall but they have been painted over and can no long read what they said. Is there somewhere else on the body or frame to find the VIN stamped? I was going to apply for a bonded title but I want to know for sure what number to use! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Or, if the engine number does not match the title, the original engine number is usually stamped into the frame. On a 46-48 Plymouth, it's on the outer side of the frame a bit before the left rear wheel. Probably have to scrape and/or use wire brush to find it. If your number begins with "D24", it would be a 46-48 Dodge. Quote
adam_knox Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 Hey mate, I had a similar issue with my car. I don't know how the TX DMV is, but 'round here the DMV actually worked around the issue. My problem was that California in the 40's used the engine # for the VIN, and WI uses the door jamb VIN. Talked with the nice gal behind the counter and she got it all straightened out on paper. Good luck! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 Unless somebody goes to check in person, don't bother to tell the DMW where the number is - they likely will not know the difference. I would have to check, but I think on the brown coupe, the title now contains the door sill number instead of the motor number. No telling where or when it got changed. I think the car was purchased in Arkansas quite a few years ago - maybe they changed it there. However, it proved no problem at the DMV......they just used the # on the old title......issued the new title in my name......easy deal. In MO. It seems every old Plymouth I've owned has had the engine replaced with one from another year -- one even had a factory rebuilt motor. So, none of the motor numbers would have jived with the title. Should have matched the numbers on the frame, though. Quote
