With still having the transmission in my '40 and it whinning in first gear, slight whin in second gear and no whin in third, third gear is direct, so I am told it wouldn't whin.

I guess my question is:

What would have the tendancy to go first, the cluster gear or the bearings?

I did check the oil in the tranny and it is fine?

The pumpkin oil is at the correct level also.

Thanks in advance,

Bob,

I am no expert but since first and second mesh with different gears on the cluster, I would think it more likely the noise would come from the bearings rather than the cluster.

I can also tell you that, after dissassembling and assembling my transmission two or three times, it is not all that difficult to do the repairs yourself. If I can do it anyone can.

If you are looking for a cluster you might want to check with Len Dawson at Deception Pass Motors. I got my cluster from him and he had the best price by far.
