Harvey Tank Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 on my 50 ply p20 the the gear shift on the colum is realy stiff. if I disconnect the linkage from the trans. and it is still stiff what are some of the things I should look for to correct the problem? Thanks all, for all the help I have goten from this forum. mabey when I finish my progect I can give back some of the knowlege I have gotten from it Thanks again. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Follow the gear shift rods under the hood from the steering column down. You'll see that there are a couple of joints. Lube those joints and see if that helps. Also, the gear selector will be stiff when the transmission fluid is cold. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 Perhaps some old caked grease and dirt on the joints. Maybe worn bushings. Anything bent or jammed a little? Anything too tight? Quote
TENN-Haney Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Ruth1932, Ever figure this out? Mine is the same? Did some lube on the joints work? Quote
Harvey Tank Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 what I finaly did was I disconeed the shifting rods at the colum. it was still hard to shift. so I dismantled the gear shifter from the colum and found that there was, I don't know what you would call it . it was grease packing like a wick in the bushing. the grease was stiff and hard. so while I had it apart I just squrting oil in on the packing untill the wick in the bushing was soaked up enough to free it up. now it shift realy easy. hope this helps. it takes a little time. the.hardest part was trying to figure out the shift lever comes apart. then you need to remember how you took it apart. i should have took photos of it but I didn't.
