"The hawg et mah hub!"

The saga continues...

Yesterday afternoon, I finally found time to dig into the RF hub/drum issue on my '41 De Soto ( "brake-drum transplant?" thread ).

When I got the drum off the car and pulled the bearings and cleaned the grease out, I saw a pretty ugly sight... I knew that the outer bearing race was loose in the hub; once the grease was out of there, I found out how bad: take your wedding band off, and drop it into an empty olive jar and swirl it around... that's a pretty good metaphor for how badly the inside of the hub was "hogged"... I actually had trouble removing the race, as the outer 3/16" or so ( where the dust-cap seats) was un-marred, and the race kept getting cocked as I tried to drive it past...

The inner race was loose too; not as bad but enough that I could wiggle it with a thumb & forefinger.

So, things were damaged beyond being able to sufficiently raise the surrounding metal with a prick-punch, at least where the outer race lives.

( The "right" machine shop could build-up the hogged section, and machine back to size... don't know if we have that sort of shop around here anymore)

For the time being, to keep the car mobile, I installed new bearings in a drum salvaged from a '41 Chrysler ( has some cracks in the pressed steel face), and put the car back on the ground.

SO, it looks like I am on the hunt for another drum ( 11" x 2 ", RF) or I will be doing the hub transplant.

Thanks for all the input on the transplant thread...

Will report on my progress if I go that way...

Looks like winter is finally settling into NE Penna: rain today (heavy), changing to snow showers tomorrow... yuck.
