  1. My 39 P8 has a 218 stroked with a 230 crank. Little bigger pistons as well. I rebuilt a carb a while back and have been having some problems getting the car to idle smoothly. Seemed like part of the issue was the carburetor even though I had put a kit in it. So after some research I found out that there was a bigger carb that would fit. I bought an E7T2 carb off eBay. This carb has a 1-11/16" throttle bore and was used on a 50-58 Dodge truck. Also used in some Chrysler cars as well. I was going to try and replace the one I have on my 39 P8 which has a 1-9/16" throttle bore. Rebuilt the carb yesterday and when I put it on the intake manifold I could see how the larger bore on the carb overlapped the intake. Didn't seem to make much sense unless I got an intake that would fit the bore of the carb. But - I started it anyway and it ran rough as anything. Could not get it to idle down below 1000 rpm without dying. Played with it all yesterday afternoon then today got up and went out there and started digging thru my carb parts and kits. Got enough parts and kit parts to piece together and rebuild another one with the 1-9/16 bore and replace both my previous one and the E7T2. Before I started I went thru some previous posts on carbs just to bone up on the process. Glad I did, I came across one post that linked to a U-Tube with Mikes Carburetors - this guy went thru the rebuild process for a B&B carb. He also mentioned that the step-up piston had a gasket that was usually missing when he tore them apart. Well, I didn't know there was a gasket supposed to go in there so the ones I rebuilt didn't get one. Except the one I did today. I started it up a little while ago and it is running as lot better. I actually got it to idle down to just below 600 and its running pretty smooth. Couple things: 1. I cannot open the idle adjustment more than 1/4 turn without the engine dying. It will also die if I shut it all the way so there is a very small happy medium in there. 2. A vacuum gauge shows 20 but has a very small steady shake to the needle. Not more than a half either way but its shaking. Like 19.5 to 20.5 Anyway, I came across another post asking about bushings for a lose throttle shaft to keep it from sucking air thru the throttle body. While I was going thru my throttle bodies looking for a fairly tight shaft I came across one that felt really good and snug. So I thought I would choose that one to use for my new rebuild. When I took the throttle plate and shaft out I found the shims in the pic below. They look like brass but extremely thin, thinner than paper almost. I thought I would post the pic, not recommending it in any event. Actually I did not use this shaft or the shims in my current project but just thought I would throw it out here. If anyone has any ideas what might keep me from opening my idle adjustment more I would appreciate it. I believe its suppose to be around 1-1/2 turns give or take.
