New to this car. There is a door keylock on the passenger side. There isn't one on the driver's side The driver's door is locked and the only way to open it is to reach inside and pull the lever from the inside. 1. Any advice on the door-lock mechanis before I take the panels off and start digging? 2. Why would they put a keylock on the passenger side and not the driver's side?

So, the link that is in the "NOS Sending Unit" goes to an ebay page that lists a sending unit for 66-69 Lincoln.... etc. I am imagining that this is some kind of hyperlink that gets autofilled by advertisers on this site? In any event, my question is this: on the sending unit or my car, would I just remove the cork and replace it with the "Chevy's of the 40's" plastic float?

It's kind of a strange listing... Yes, "THAT" auction has ended (they sold a total of 2 in that auction), but they have 6 more available for sale.

I recently picked up a 1940 Royal. The gas guage doesn't work and the seller told me he purchased and installed a fuel sending unit but, becuase (his words) he "didn't seal the cork", he thinks it's defective now. I plan on replacing the fuel sending unit even if that's not the true culprit. I talked to someone who sells parts for older Chrysler's (sorry - can't remember the name of the company), and she told me that the ones she sells are already sealed and that, if this one has been sitting in the tank for any length of time, there's a good chance the cork has broken down and there is a concern the bits of cork can find their way through the fuel system and wreak other havoc. THEN I find this on his site and it’s $115. ??? I sent him another message asking if this is the fuel sending unit, and he said yes. So now I’m confused. What I’m wondering is if there are different categories / qualities of fuel sending units for this car… one that is “sealed”, one that isn’t. I do remember my conversation with that lady who said she had a sealed one, and it was something like $185. If this one on the Ebay auction is the correct unit, and I can somehow “seal” it myself for a couple of bucks, that would make sense to do. Otherwise I will find that website again and buy the one that is $185. I attached a pic of the one on Ebay for future reference, just in case someone else later down the road stumbles into this same scenario =.

So... trying to understand why, when the engine is already warm, engaging this would allow it to start when pumping the pedal would not? The car was driven 20+ miles, parked for 2-3 minutes, and it wouldn't start after repeated attempts until this was engaged.

So, a technical question for youall.... The knob to the right of starter button... what is it? The owner drove the car to drop it off at my house. The engine was warm. I wanted him to show me a few things. He tried to start it, and it would just turn over and over. Then he pulled the knob out, and it started. I just assumed it was a choke, but he said it was some sort of cruise control or something. I'm confused.

Some of the remaining plastic looks pretty thin - maybe about 1/15th of an inch. But other pieces look much thicker... up to approximately 1/4". I have the repair manual and a parts manual for the car, but so far I haven't found anything that gives me any specs on the dash pieces.

That's WAY more talent than I have. Will have to try to figure out how I will tackle this. There's this really cool business that opened up here earlier this year: Tinkertank = http://downtowntinkertank.com/ - There have a lot of cool equipment that, once you go through their classes on how to use them without breaking them or hurting yourself, you get to play with their equipment. The girl who owns it is pretty much a genius, and she knows how to use all the software, equipment, etc. They have some 3-D printers. If I can figure out how to get the pieces from concept to computer drawings, I could make them at the shop. I have what's left of the pieces on the car... I'm thinking that I might be able to get to a point where I can spec them out and print them in plastic. Thoughts?

Mine are pretty badly warped. I only spent a few minutes looking at it so I can't give any detailed info, but what I do remember is that they were so badly warped that they are peeled away from the dash several inches in multiple places. I will get some pics when it arrives at my house and post them here. I might try to heat them up and reshape them, but I doubt that will work... they may just be too far gone.

ok-I officially have Interior Envy. Just a lovely specimen you have there! How do I find Harold Mermel or Dennis Bickford? Are they members in this site, or do I just Google them? I tried finding them in the members area by applying the filter with the name but came up empty.

Reg- Are you restoring original pieces or did you make them? Mine are pretty far gone... doubt they are restorable. I will need to either find replacements or somehow figure out a way to have them built.

Thanks Casper Sorry if you have to hold your laptop sideways... I didn't know they needed to be rotated before uploading... I just snapped them and dumped them on the laptop for later use. I will post better, eg; "straight" pics when I get it.

HI all - Wow. You all are pretty active here I see. Thanks so much for all the input. I looked at that post on the '39 and along with other research I have done I think I would be looking for a needle in a haystack to find anything original, and because of the rarity of the car I highly doubt anyone is making repops. I thought about the 3-D printer angle... if I could find some drawings or specs of the dash pieces I have a local place that is VERY proficient at rendering CAD drawings and making 3-D objects. I don't have many pics yet. I still haven't taken possession of the car yet, but I did snap a few the day I bought it. I uploaded them to photoshop ... having a hard time copying and pasting a link on this site. will keep trying. When I paste nothing appears in the body content ... it just remains blank?? And I can't figure out how to upload pics to "My Media" - can't find the "upload" button???
