  1. Can someone tell me if the chrome pieces and trim on my 48 Desoto dashboard are chrome plated or stainless steel? There is some what looks like pitting like chrome but I read somewhere they didn;t plate back then and used stainless. If it is stainless, I assume I could sand away the pitting and buff. Is this correct or am I stuck with pits. Thanks, Billy
  2. Thanks for all the help, I tried all of your suggestions and still no upshift. The electrical system seems fine so I am assuming the problem is internal..I found a rebuilt trans on Ebay for $399 + $95 shipping. Does anyone know anyone that will take the 2 old ones off of my hands, I have a motor too. Thanks for the help, Billy Z
  3. I have a 48 Desoto with a Fluid Drive trans and I believe I have gone as far as I can go. It refuses to upshift. The idle is correct, all the electrical tests seem to pass, I am very frustrated! Can anyone recommend someone in the Phoenix area I can ask to look at this? I want to drive the car but this is my last hurdle. Thanks, Bill B Peoria, Az
  4. I have a 48 Desoto and it runs great but will not upshift from the low gears or from the high gears. It takes off well but when I let up on the gas, there is nothing. I have to rev high and it goes into the previous gear. I have checked everything I know how to do and think maybe I should have it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. Does anyone know of a place in or around Phoenix. Or, what should I look for in the yellow pages? Thanks, Bill
  5. Thanks to everyone for the help. I read about the Fluid Drive and looked at the Imperial site. Good tips! I will perform their diagnostics this weekend and see if I can figure it out. One more quickie. I have meters and such but this is my first 6 volt car. Can I check RPMs and timing with my 12 volt tools or does someone sell 6 volt equipment? Thanks, Billyzack
  6. Actually it's a 48 Desoto. It runs so good and very smooth but just won't shift. Maybe I should try to go faster and see if it will shift at a higher speed. Thanks, BZ
  7. I am a new member and I recently bought a "48" with Fluid Drive. The car runs great but when I let off the gas to let it upshift in both low and high, I hear a faint click but it doesn't shift into the higher gear. It doesn't go into a higher gear but at that point, it is in no gear, I can give it gas and it is like it is in neutral. Then I slow down and it goes into the lower gear again. The previous owner said he found the car with 90 weight gear oil in the trans and he replaced it with 10 weight oil. he suggested maaybe the plunger was gummed up. How can I diagnose this before I pay someone who knows how much to do it for me? I appreciate any help. Also, does anyone know some good mechanics in or around Phoenix, Az. Thanks again, Billyzack
